Abstract

This article discusses how the use of generative AI systems can lead to misunderstanding and rote learning of course material when students independently prepare for exams in specialized disciplines. Through a specific example related to designing an optical communication line, it illustrates how a series of incorrect and contradictory responses from ChatGPT 4 can create a false sense of mastered knowledge and result in inaccurate self-assessment. Real excerpts from chat sessions are included, demonstrating AI “hallucinations” and the difficulties in interpreting physical formulas, the cutoff wavelength (λ_gr), and the modes in an optical fiber. The results show that students need to apply critical thinking and validate AI-generated answers with reliable sources.
